A Brief History

Elwood
Bar & Grill

The Art Moderne-style Elwood was designed by Charles Noble and built in 1936. Its name is a hybrid of its original location streets, Elizabeth and Woodward.

It was first owned by the John R. Williams Estate, followed by George and Mary Courtesis, until it was purchased by Chuck Forbes in the 1980s.

In 1997, to preserve the historic bar during construction of Comerica Park for the Detroit Tigers, the Elwood was moved to its present location on E. Adams Street. It remains an iconic game-day hangout for sports fans today.
